Creamy Dreamy Chocolate-Banana Protein Shake

Are your smoothies and shakes lacking creaminess? Are you looking for the perfect morning, or pre-workout protein shake? Look no further! Today we are talking about freeze-dried bananas and why I love them so much. Keep reading to see how these crunchy bananas have revolutionized my morning breakfast routine, and get the recipe for the chocolate protein shake I drink every single morning.

The History Behind my Favorite Protein Shake

I love schedules and routines. Is that weird?! I know there are people who thrive on flexibility, but I have always loved a good scheduled routine. 90% of the time this is what a typical weekday morning looks like for me. 5:15 AM alarm. 6:00-7:00 AM CrossFit. 7:15-8:00 AM get kids ready, fed, and off to school. 8:00 AM, make and enjoy every sip of my morning chocolate protein shake.

I know this sounds silly, but sometimes this shake is the only thing that gets me through my morning. I think to myself. I can do this workout because in an hour I get my shake. Or, I can deal with kids complaining about eating oatmeal, because in a little bit I get to drink my shake!

I have had it almost every morning for the past year and I never tire of it. Of course I switch it up occasionally. Sometimes I go crazy and have Orgain PB instead of chocolate fudge, or a bowl of oatmeal instead, but most of the time I stick with this tried-and-true shake because I love it. And I feel like over the year I have finally perfected the amounts and ingredients.

Why Freeze-Dried Bananas are Crucial

Thrive Life Banana Slices

You COULD make this shake with regular ol’ bananas, but it would not be able to have the title of creamy in it anymore. By happy accident one morning I realized what a difference using freeze-dried bananas makes. We had run out of bananas so I decided to dump in a handful of freeze-dried bananas instead of a fresh banana before I blended it up. The creaminess and consistency was AMAZING. I have never gone back.

Then we started using freeze-dried bananas in our smoothies as well. Same thing. PERFECT consistency. Some other advantages of using freeze-dried is you don’t have to go buy bananas that are either way too green, or brown and spotty at the store. You can just always have bananas ready to go in your pantry!

I used to buy bananas and freeze them in chunks for smoothies, but they always got gross and freezer-burned before I got to them.

Note: Remember, freeze-dried has the SAME nutritional value as fresh!

Let’s Talk Protein Powders…

I know there are all sorts of opinions out there about protein powders. This brand is my personal preference though. I talked about the reasons I love this particular brand so much in this post, but the short of it is my stomach can’t tolerate whey. This is a plant-based protein and it tastes a million times better than the other plant-based proteins I have tried and it doesn’t bother my stomach at all since there is no dairy in it.

You can use any brand of chocolate protein powder you prefer when you make the shake. If you are like me and haven’t had success with whey powders in the past, try out the Orgain. I usually buy it at Costco, but I have also ordered it on Amazon.

Oats, Oats, Oats…

I love oatmeal anything. I add a scoop of oats because I love the slightly chunky texture and the slightly oat-y taste it gives to the shake. This is certainly optional, but I never leave them out. You can use quick or old-fashioned. I would probably stay away from steel-cut oats though. I don’t think they would get soft enough.

PB2 or Peanut Flour {Same Great Taste}

I LOVE the addition of either PB2 or Peanut Flour in my shake because I love chocolate peanut butter combos. I am not a religious calorie counter, but I try to avoid eating spoonfuls of peanut butter like I did back in my college days just due to the sheer amount of calories and fat. This powder adds a nice peanut butter taste without adding a lot of calories to the shake.

I love PB2, and the Thrive Peanut Flour. They are exactly the same nutritionally, have the same shelf life, and taste exactly the same to me. You can’t go wrong with either. I order my PB2 from Amazon if I don’t have Thrive Peanut Flour on hand.

As mentioned above, I don’t handle dairy very well so I drink almond milk 100% of the time. I LOVE almond milk in this shake, but feel free to use regular old cows milk if that is what you prefer. I always use vanilla, unsweetened almond milk.

5-Ingredient PB&J Balls {Gluten & Dairy Free}

These PB&J balls are the perfect way to satisfy a PB&J craving without slathering on calorie-filled peanut butter and sugary grape jelly!

grapes-and-peanut-flour

You simply cannot go wrong with combining nuts and dates in my opinion. I have tried so many variations of these types of snacks, but thought it would be fun to make a PB&J version. The great thing is you get the flavors of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without sugary, processed jelly, calorie-filled peanut butter, and bread. I love these little gems of a snack and I hope you will to. With only 5-ingredients, they couldn’t be simpler to make, and they taste great right out of the freezer.
